adaptive radiation
process where organisms evolve fast from ancestor into many new forms
extinction
death of all members of a species
isolating mechanism
Traits/geological factors that prevent interbreeding & maintain reproductive isolation
postmating isolating mechanism
Mechanisms that prevent the formation of vigorous, fertile hybrids between species. Example is infertile offspring.
premating isolating mechanism
mechanism that prevent mating between species.
speciation
process of species formation in which a single species splits in 2 or more species
species
a group of populations that evolve independently
reproductive isolation
failure of organisms of one population to breed successfully with members of another
Temporal Isolation
No mate because active at diff time of day/diff season
Ecological Isolation
No mate because diff. habitat
Behavioral Isolation
No mate because diff. behavior e.g. specific bird mating calls with only with same species of bird
Mechanical Isolation
Physical incompatibility between reproductive organs of 2 organisms
Geographic Isolation
No mate because geographic barrier e.g. river, mountain
Causes of extinction
habitat loss, overhunting, climate change, pollution, disease spread
Allopatric speciation
evolution in species due to geographical barrier e.g. cow have barrier. desert one side field other side. desert cow eat cacti. field side eat grass
