Chap 1 - Biological molecules Flashcards
What does carbohydrates consist of
Single sugar ( monosaccharide ) , double sugar ( dissaccharide ) and complex carbohydrates ( polysaccharide )
What is food high in carbohydrates
Rice, noodles, potato and bread
What is simple sugars
Basic unit of carbohydrates ➡ glucose and fructose
What are small molecules
Cannot be further digest and readily absorbed by cell
Where can glucose be found
Plants, animal and humans
Where can fructose be found
plants
What is double sugar and where are they found
Two single sugars like maltose and sucrose join together that are found in plants
What is complex carbohydrates
Many single sugar molecules join together to form larger molecules
What does glycogen, starch and cellulose make from
Glucose molecules
What is starch
Storage of glucose in plants
What is Glycogen
Storage of glucose in animals that are found in liver and muscles
What is cellulose
Provides structure support for plant cell ( mainly cell wall )
What are the elements that make up carbohydrates
Organic molecules ➡ make up of carbon, hydrogen and oxgyen
What is the function of carbohydrates
Immediate source of energy where energy is release from glucose ( single sugar ) during respiration and to form cell structure for cell wall
Molecules are make up of carbon atoms ➡ chemically linked to other elements found in living things true or false
True
