1
Q
Definitions of stress
A
- Response definition
- Stimulus definition
- Transactional (AKA “cognitive”) definition
2
Q
How does stress influence health?
A
- Physiological effects
- Health habits
- Health services & disease management
3
Q
3 ways to define stress
A
- Physiological response
- Environmental stimulus
- Person-Environment transaction
4
Q
Response deffinition of stress
Physiological response
A
Stress = psysiological response to unpleasent or threatning stimulus (stressors).
Varying stressors -> same pattern of physiological response
5
Q
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
A
The sequence of physiological reactions to prolonged and intense stress. The sequence consists of the alarm reaction, the stage of resistance, and the stage of exhaustion
6
Q
What are the 3 stages of the General Adaptation Syndrome?
A
- Alarm
- Initial shock
- fight or flight response
- Sympathetic Nervous System predominantely
.( Adrenal gland -> epinephrine, norepinephrine)
-Later, HPA is activated. - Resistance
- Body adapts to stress
- May show fewer outward signs of stress
- Initial reaction of the Sympathetic Nervous System becomes less pronounced
- Continued HPA activation
.(hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal)
.Release of cortisol (“stress hormone”) - Exaustion
- Physical damage & desease
- Prolonged physiological arousal produced by severe, long-term, or repeated stress is costly
- It can weaken the immune system and deplete the body’s energy reserves
