Channel processes creating meanders and oxbow lakes Flashcards
meanders
bend in the rivers course e./g Yarn (river tees)
when does a river begin to meander?
when water begins to flow around pools and riffles as the thalweg avoids them, causing lateral erosion. it exaggerates over time=bends
when is a river cliff formed?
when helicordial flow causes a river to flow towards the outer banks, the bottom flow is towards the inner bank…causing variations in the cross section as well as variations in erosion and deposition. these variations give rise to river cliffs on the outer banks and slip off slopes.
riffle
shallow parts of the water where deposition occurs
thalweg
line of maximum velocity in a river
pools
deep parts of rivers (where it travels fastest)
centrifugal
outwards-moving force
helicordial flow
the cork-screw like motion that occurs in a meander
