ChangingProperties+StructuresOfMetals Flashcards
What is annealing
Heating a material to make it more easy to work with
What is hardening
Controlled heating+cooling to get steel to best strength and toughness
What is tempering
Creates greater toughness by decreasing hardness of alloy
What is Case hardening
Heating a metal to red hot then instantly plunging into cold liquid
2 dis/advantages of annealing
-reduces material fracture
-higher ductile
-time consuming
2 dis/advantages of hardening
-higher strength and durability
-increased lifetime
- high chance of distortion
2 dis/advantages of tempering
-less hardness therefore high ductility
-increases strength
-quenching makes it brittle
-metal can easily fracture
2 dis/advantages of Case hardening
-increases steel strength
-easier to weld
-outside of metal is harder than inside
