Changing Urban Areas Flashcards
Areas of a city
CBD (central business district); Main offices and shops. Located in the centre of the city
Inner-city; Located around the centre. Income is often low, unemployment is common and crime rates are high. Houses are often rundown
Suburbs; Residential edge of settlements. Mostly detached single family homes and low population densities
Rural-urban fringe; Typically found around the edge of modern cities. Usually where park and ride facilities are found
Housing issues
Many families are packed into single houses without much space
Gentrification modernises older streets for newer residents. This can make it difficult for the people who already lived there with the higher prices
Traffic issues
Congestion is when traffic exceeds the capacity roads are designed for. This causes an increase in air pollution which is small areas can impact younger people’s lungs and increase the likelihood of developing cancer leading to an estimate of 23,500 premature deaths in the UK
Public transport may be a solution to congestion and is better for the environment but has started becoming increasingly expensive
Parking is also an issue as traffic makes it difficult to find an available spot
Cultural issues
Ethnic and religious tensions can lead to discrimination and hate crimes
Language barriers can make it difficult for certain people to get access to education, employment or healthcare
