Changing the role of women Flashcards

Q
Facts about changing the role of women
A
Less than 10% of women worked as nurses, as professionals or
in offices.
* In 1911, 3,758 women worked in heavy industry and by 1918 it
was 31,500. This was because during WWI women were needed
to support the war effort.
Women were thought to be unable to do the work of men and
many thought their place was in the home.
* The 1911 Scottish Census shows that over half of women
working did so as servants or making cloth or clothing
(something women had traditionally always done).
