A

A

A

Used for 1000s of yrs to locate places.
Could be used to show stats in contrast to other areas (choropleth mapping of income across country).
Ordinance survey - landscape charac.s and specialist features.
Historical - can influence ppls perceptions and sense of place +vely.

A

A

A

Not all ppl in area may agree w/ creators pov.

Not objective - only places deemed relevant may be on map and others that ppl may not want to be seen left out.

What are the advantages of interviews?

A

Qualitative. Generate detailed insight into ppls sense of place or their perception. First-hand/direct reports of experiences, opinions and feelings. Like having a personal conversation, open ended Qs - more info.

What are the disadvantages of interviews?

A

Person leading interview may be biased and structure Qs to get specific answer. Ppl want to rep. themselves and often their local place positively - may be dishonest. Limitations on no. of Qs research asks - not representative.

What are the advantages of using photographs?

A

Accurate rep. Taken and used in media campaigns to show others what available in place. Allows ppl to gain instant insight into place w/o having to visit - accurate judgement. Geographical distance less of an obstacle in ppls understanding and knowledge of a place.

What are the disadvantages of photographs?

A

Easily edited - images distorted and don’t show reality. Selective in what is portrayed. Represents one moment in time and therefore not fully representative.

A

Create sense of place which allows reader to know what it is like to be there. Some places associated w/ particular author so can be used to promote.

A

Popular media can create ‘place prejudice’. Novels can misrep. places as they’re from 1 persons pov - subjective. Places frequently change so old novels lose relevance.

Long been used to describe and evoke sense of place. Famous poets linked to a place - promotion. Reader can imagine place. Can rep. cultures ppl didn’t previously know abt.

A

Place associated w/ crime dramas, misrep, suffer negative rep. Same place shown in many diff. ways - inconsistent.

Rep. positive view of place. Some synonymous w/ certain places, can be used in campaigns. Can show deeper understanding of place and used as catalyst for rebranding an area.

A

Can rep. idealised or romanticised view of place which doesn’t actually exist e.g. Cezanne’s rep.s of Provence in Southern France.
Can be considered less reliable than photos as more scope for ind. interpretation and selection.
Only rep. one moment of a place - cannot truly rep. charac.s or nature of place.

A

Recently accepted into mainstream culture. Can rep. feelings of ppl who would otherwise go unnoticed. Rep. feelings of groups and comment on other issues.

A

May be considered vandalism and authorities remove it from public areas. Traditionally associated w/ youth culture, may not rep. views of everyone in that area.

A

Designing buildings and structure of towns influences day to day nature and charac.s of place. Work on dev. sustainable and healthy places have become more important and play pivotal role in redev. and rebranding. Improve nature of area and lead to greater wealth.

Can lead to gentrification where ppl who would have originally inhabited a place can no longer afford to live there - displace local ppl. Can cause conflict between residents and developers leading to protests.
