what is brick lanes location?
East end of London in tower hamlets, formally called whitechapel lane but was changed due to the brick manufactures. Near spitalfields and aprox 0.6 miles from liverpool street station
what is the physical locale
area used to be home to the silk weaving industry which was one of the largest industries in the 18th century
at the south end of the street there’s a park called altab ali park formerly called st mary’s however due to the influence of bengalis
What is the social locale
18th century influx of russian polish and jewish immigrants who began to set up the high streets
still a small community of jews
the bengali community is heavily populated in brick lane causing cultural change and the set up of curry shops
What is the historical development
- in the 17th century was white (it’s now 41.5% muslim and 18.4 christians)
- influx of jews in 20th century in 1990 90% of population was jewish
what is the change in demographic and cultural characteristics
- east end docks used for shipping to india and bengal was a gateway to migration from that area of the world, causing brick lane to have a 41% bengali population, the bengali’s have changed the demographic of brick lane and therefore have caused cultural change in the area

known for its vibrant art and fashion centre
well known place for london clubs and bars
fashion art graffiti culture
the truman brewery has also provided a huh for fashion art and young people
how is brick lane regenerating
the old truman brewery was the largest brewery in the world in 1853 it’s now been transformed into an office, retail, leisure and event space which has helped regenerate and boost the local economy it’s also good for upcoming creative businesses it holds 200 small businesses
