What is location locale and sense of place
Location= where a place in on a map
Locale= how a place is shaped by the people customs and cultures within it
Sense of place = developed through experience it reflects emotional and subjective attachment

Phenomenological approach- yi Fu tuan and Edward relph- places are defined through human experiences it is the connection between person and place that transforms unknown spaces into familiar places
A sense of place Doreen Massey- places are dynamic with multiple identities and no boundaries they are constantly changed and moulded by outside influences of the wider world
Cultural approach Jon Anderson- places are given meaning by the traces that exist in them physical traces such as building and historic monuments and emotional traces such as events
What is globalisation
The growing interdependence of countries through increasing global transactions of goods and services increasing flows of information labour and capital and the widespread transfer of technology
Glocalisation definition
A response to globalisation- promotion of local goods and services and the adaptation of global products to the specific locality in an effort to regain local cultures and identities
What are the three factors of the importance of place
Well being - what makes a place good to live in- sociability, access, activities, image
Belonging- community spirit, inclusivity regardless of age gender socio economic status
Identity- how it defines your identity, local regional or national

Used to dispel negative perceptions
Aims to give place a new more positive identity at local national and international scales
What is regeneration
Longer term process aimed initially at economic regeneration which through multiplier effect will bring further social and physical improvements.

Descriptive - world is made up of a set of places each of which can be studied through a description of its physical and human characteristics.
Social constructionist approach - places are a product of social processes occurring at a particular time and place and this gives it meaning.

Can refer to physical distances socio economic gap between residents or the emotional connection people feel to a place
