A location with meaning, places can be meaningful to individuals in personal or subjective ways. Places are also meaningful at a social or cultural level and the meanings may be shared by different groups of people

The deliberate shaping of an environment to facilitate social interaction and improve the community’s quality of life

Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes or opinions

Descriptive approach to places
The idea that the world is a set of places and each place can be studied and is distinct
Social constructivist approach
This approach sees a place as a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time
Phenomenological approach
This approach is interested in how an individual person experiences a place, recognising the highly personal relationship between a person and a place.
Topophilia
The affective bond between a place and a person in relation to the phenomenological approach

Localism
An affection for or emotional ownership of a place. Can be seen in ‘nimbyism’ (not in my back yard) when people are reluctant to let their local area be affected by development
