Changing Earth Flashcards
What are the 3 weathering?
The 3 weathering types are Biological weathering, Chemical weathering and Physical weathering
What is the difference between weathering and erosion?
Weathering is the process of rocks being worked down by the weather while erosion is the process of moving small particles using wind and water.
What are techniques used to identify a type of rock?
Hardness, Lustre, Transparency, Density, Composition, Size of the grain in rock
What are fossils?
Fossils are remains (or imprints) of animal or plant preserved into a rock.
What is the state of mercury
Liquid
What are igneous rocks?
Igneous rocks are rocks formed by cooling magma.
What do you get when you mix Iron with Carbon and nitrogen
Ferrycyanide
What do you get if you mix Na with Cl?
Sodium chloride
What are examples of the rock types??
Sedimentary: shale, gypsum, limestone, dolomite and sandstone
Metamorphic: slate, marble, Quartz, gneiss and anthracite
Igneous: pumice, granite, scoria, grabbro and obsidian
What chemicals are in [Fe(CN)6]3
Iron, carbon, nitrogen
What are the properties of metals
Conductive, Malleable, shiny.
How does a metaphoric rock form?
Metamorphic rocks are formed when other types of rocks are changed by extreme heat and pressure inside the earth.
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
They are formed when sediments ( loose particles ) are pressed together over a long period of time.
What are the layers of the earth?
The Inner core, outer core, mantle and crust
What are sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments being compacted.
What are the different types of weathering?
Chemical, biological and physical.
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Sediment rocks are formed when sediments ( rock particles, mud, sand or pebbles)are pressed together over a long period of time.
What is the hardest mineral in the MOHs scale of hardness??
Diamond
How are igneous rocks formed?
Igneous rocks are formed when a volcano erupts and lava comes out and it cools and becomes a solid.
How are intrusive rocks formed?
Intrusive rocks are formed underground when magma gets trapped in small pockets. Over millions of years the magma cools underground to form the rocks.
What are metamorphic rocks?
Metamorphic rocks are formed when other types of rocks are changed by extreme heat and pressure inside the Earth.
What is softest mineral in MOHs scale of hardness?
Talc
What is lustre?
Shining
What is streak?
The colour of the crushed mineral.
What is cleavage?
The number of smooth planes that minerals break along.
What are the rock types?
Metamorphic,igneous and sedimentary
What are the three rock types?
Igneous, sedimentary and Metamorphic.
What is the thickest layer of the earth?
Mantle
What is the thinnest layer of the earth?
Crust
Define erosion:
The process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water or other natural agent.
Define weathering:
To wear away or change the appearance or texture of something by long exposure to the atmosphere.
What is the only liquid layer of the earth?
Outer core
What is the outer layer of the earth?
Crust
What is the inner layer of the earth?
Inner core
