Q

How do ice cores detect changes in temperature?

A

When snow falls it traps air into the ice. When scientists take a core of ice it reveals the atmospheric gas concentrations at the time the snow fell. This is used to calculate temperature at that time. The ice can reveal the temperature of each year for the past 400,000 years

Q

Explain the greenhouse effect

A

The atmosphere allows the heat from the Sun (short-wave radiation) to pass through to heat the Earth’s surface. The Earth’s surface then gives off heat (long-wave radiation).
This heat is trapped by greenhouse gases (eg methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide), which radiate the heat back towards Earth.
This process heats up the Earth

16
Q

What is Eccentricity (Milankovitch Cycle) ?

A

Shape of Earth’s orbit

17
Q

What is Precession (Milankovitch Cycle) ?

A

the slow, wobble-like shift in the Earth’s rotational axis

18
Q

What is Axial Tilt (Milankovitch Cycle)?

A

the angle at which Earth’s rotational axis is tilted relative to its orbital plane around the sun

19
Q

Impacts of Climate Change in the UK?

A

Sea levels rise covering areas of East England, droughts and floods become more likely, increased demand for water in summer puts strain on water supplies, impact on industries (ski resorts in Scotland with no snow)

20
Q

Impacts of Climate Change across the world?

A

Sea levels rise will affect 80 million people, tropical storms will increase is magnitude, species in certain areas (arctic) may become extinct, diseases like malaria increase, possibly affecting 280 million people
