Who was Gorbachev?
A
- appointed 1985
- new young Soviet leader who was prepared to adopt drastic policies to improve detente
- wanted to improve detente as if he didn’t the USSR would collapse

Why did Gorbachev implement ‘new thinking’
A
- realised capitalism was more efficient than communism
- many people had lost faith in communism

What was ‘New thinking’?
A
- reforms to improve communism
- perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness)
- ending arms race
- abandoning Brezhnev Doctrine and stopping USSR interference in satellite states

How did perestroika and glasnost turn out?
A
- Glasnost= censorship removed and more freedom for people meant they learned of the atrocities, and wanted to know more and criticise Gorbachev more (difficult to keep Communist party in control)
- perestroika= reforms in political system, free elections and Gorbachev won support
