  • realised capitalism was more efficient than communism

- many people had lost faith in communism

A
  • reforms to improve communism
  • perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness)
  • ending arms race
  • abandoning Brezhnev Doctrine and stopping USSR interference in satellite states

How did perestroika and glasnost turn out?

A
  • Glasnost= censorship removed and more freedom for people meant they learned of the atrocities, and wanted to know more and criticise Gorbachev more (difficult to keep Communist party in control)
  • perestroika= reforms in political system, free elections and Gorbachev won support
