Changes Of State Flashcards
What is density?
Density tells you how much mass the is in a certain volume
How do you calculate density?
Density(kg/m^3) = mass(kg)/ volume m^3
How does state cause density to vary?
In 1cm^3 of a solid there is more particles than 1cm^3 of a gas do the solid has a greater density as it’s mass is greater
What is conservation of mass?
You have to add or remove material for a system to change. Particles do not appear or disappear. If 1g of ice melts you will have 1g of water
What does temperature tell you?
How hot or cold something is
How does kelvin differ from degrees Celsius
Kelvin starts from absolute zero-273 degrees Celsius
What does the energy in a thermal store depend on?
The arrangement of particles and how fast they are moving or vibrating
What 3 things can happen when you heat something up?
Change the energy stored within a system to increase the temperature. Produce a change in state. Make chemical reactions happen.
What is a physical change?
A physical change is a change in state eg dissolving or melting. You do not make new substances the particles are simply rearranged
What is a chemical reaction?
Chemical reactions involve joining atoms together in different ways. You cannot easily reverse a chemical change
What is specific heat capacity?
The energy needed to raise 1kg of a material by 1K
How do you calculate specific heat capacity?
Change in thermal energy(J) =mass(kg) x specific heat capacity (J/Kg C) x change in temperature
What is specific latent heat?
The energy transferred when 1kg of a substance changes state
What is the specific latent heat of fusion?
The amount of energy transferred when 1kg of a substance changes from solid to liquid state
What is specific latent heat of vaporisation?
The energy transferred when 1kg of a substance changes from liquid to gas
