Introduces cleanliness & separate wards, reduces death rate from 50% to 2%.
Opens a nursing school to improve the training for nurses.
Is known as the ‘Lady with the lamp’ for her care of soldiers.
Writes a report to the Queen about hospitals and consults on new hospitals

Importance:
Changes the way Army hospitals are run. Improves the standard of nursing in Britain and the hospitals.

A

Key feature: First female doctor

Facts:
Works as a nurse but attends lectures and trains to be a doctor.

Faces opposition from male students and men who think women are inferior. They say women cannot deal with the gruesome roles of a doctor.

Qualifies as a doctor but has to take college of apothecaries to court to practice as a doctor.

Importance:
Changes the role of and perception of women in medicine. Inspires other women to become doctors.

A

Key feature:
Jamacain nurse who helped soldiers during the Crimean war

Facts:
Like Florence Nightingale she travels to Crimea to work in Army hospitals, but she pays her own fare.

Helps improve conditions for soldiers but goes largely unrecognised until recentley.

Importance:
First black nurse to change the way Army hospitals are run. Improves the standard of nursing in army hospitals during the Crimean war but goes largely unrecognised because she is black.
