Changes in Force and Motion Vocab Flashcards
Acceleration
A change in motion caused by an unbalanced force acting on an object. The object must speed up, slow down, or change direction to be called acceleration.
Direction
A straight path that an object can move along.
Frame of Refrence
A system that uses coordinates or background objects to establish position or to measure movement of a point in space.
Net Force
The sum of all the forces acting on an object.
Speed
The rate or change in position with respect to time. Speed= distance divided by time
Velocity
The distance traveled per unit of time (speed) in a given direction.
Vector
A quantity having direction as well as magnitude that can be represented by an arrow.
Magnitude
The size, quantity, or strength of a characteristic such as force or velocity.
Friction
The resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
Inertia
A property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or motion unless changed by an external force.
