change in identities Flashcards
what are the reasons for changing identities
globalisation , increased choice
what is globalisation and how is it a reason for changing identities
globalisationis the interconnection of the world in terms of time and space
the development of global economic and cultural influences have opened up societies , communities and individuals to new and different experiences , behaviours and ideas.
e.g people in the uk eat food from the USA , thailand and india and wear clothes from china and listen to music from africa. they have imported a range of cultural ideas , styles and fashions from around the globe
how is increased choice a reason for changing identities
many people now have a greater choice e.g about what they can buy a greater range of goods are available and affordable. this has led to society being based on consumerism , consumption is linked to identity - what we buy , how we dress and how we spend our leisure time reveal something about who and what we are.
what are hybrid identities
this is are a product of a mix/fusion of two or more identities
how are class identities changing
class identities are changing we can see this in cultural changes in taste and consumption.
e.g a joining up of working class and middle-class tastes make it increasingly difficult to define class identity clearly
what does Peele (2004) say about changing class identity
he argues that recent global economic changes have resulted in a blurring of traditional class identities
what does Savage (2007) say about changing class identity
he argues that the meaning of class categories have changed. greater emphasis is placed on individual rather than collective experiences - this undermines the importance of class which is by its nature collective
Benyon view on changing male identities
benyon (2002) argues that theres an increase in masculinity crisis in the current society caused by a combination of
-long term unemployment
-the loss of traditional male employment in manufacturing industries
- lower educational achievement compared to girls
-
how are male identities changing
they once focused on traditional ideas such as providing for families however this is no longer the case.
e.g marginalised masculinities
what are marginalised masculinities
male identities that can no longer control the economic resources on which masculinity was based
male identity is changing explain this view
Decline in ‘male’ jobs – particularly in heavy manual work
* More women working is a challenge to the male identity as the
breadwinner (crisis of masculinity)
* Traditional notions of hegemonic masculinity under threat with new
masculinities emerging – the rise of ‘new men’, complicit males
(Connell), metrosexual, etc.
* Changes in gender roles within the family
* Changing socialisation practices
* Changing representations of masculinity in the media
* Increased prominence of alternative gender identities (gay,
transgender)
changing feminine identities
feminine identities are changing as ideas about gender equality are more accepted globally
this allows women to move away from traditional feminine roles based in the family and take on work based identities e.g businesswoman
changing ethnic identities
due to globalization and the movement of people around the world societies are more ethnically mixed than in the past
this happens through immigration and cultural globalisation
this can lead to individual identities gradually changing by constantly drawing on new influences
how are older people identities changing
- they have more opportunities than before e.g pensions and better healthcare this means that they live a better life compared to previous generations
- older people are now picking more active roles
- ## governments are increasing the retirement age due to high cost of pensions , old people still working and paying taxes have changed their perception of being dependant on the state
how are young people and children identities changing
- society has become more child centered
- childhood has been extended , children now depend on their parents longer than before due to formal education which delays the age at which people get employed
- there’s a disappearance of childhood , innocence in children is disappearing due to exposure to adult media content , children have began dressing like adults
