““As one of the coolest growing regions of France, Champagne has historically struggled with ripening grapes. Perhaps it’s because of this that cellar masters in the 1600s, like Dom Perignon, focused on cutting-edge wine production, leading to the popularization of sparkling wines. There are three primary grapes of Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.”

Blanc de Blancs

“Blanc de Blancs means “white of whites” and is a Champagne produced with only white grapes. The majority of Blanc de Blancs are 100% Chardonnay, although a few exceptions include the rare white grapes of Arbane, Pinot Blanc, and Petit Meslier.”

Blanc de Noirs

Blanc de Noirs means “white of blacks” and is a Champagne produced with only black (red) grapes. You’ll find these wines to be made with varying proportions of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Wines tend to have a more golden hue and more red fruit aromas.”

“On very good vintages Cellar masters often create a single-vintage Champagne. While the style varies depending on the producer, they often have more aged flavors of nuts and baked fruits. Vintage Champagne is required to be aged a minimum of 36 months.”
