South Tyrol, Trentino, Trieste, and Istria from Austria. They did not gain any African colonies.
What did D’Annunzio do?
Led 2000 armed arditi troops into Fiume (which was given to Yugoslavia) and occupied it for 15 months
What did D’Annunzio demonstrate?
The way to achieve results was to act forcefully and decisively and showed that the Liberal government lacked the will and capability to enforce the the law.
Why was the Fascist movement allowed to grow in Liberal Italy?
Due to a combination of weak governments, economic instability, social unrest and the example of the occupation of the Fiume.
What was Biennio Rosso?
The two red years 1919-1920 - fighting between the socialists and the fascists.
What were the conditions like in Italy for the growth in socialism?
Debt, inflation, unemployment encouraged w/c to vote socialist. They took action by striking and factory occupations which spread to the countryside resulting in farm occupations by peasants.
What were the reactions to the rise of socialism?
The m/c and u/c were outraged that the liberal government did not seem to be offering the protection from workers.
What happened to the socialist movement after 1920?
People became disillusioned and their number and inspired occupations and strikes went down.
Why did socialist support weaken?
They had not yet achieved their aim of reforming the liberal system let alone a full scale revolution
When was the PPI founded and what was its purpose?
in 1919, by Don Sturzo and was able appeal to conservative Catholics who were interested in improving the conditions of the peasantry in the countryside.
What was the democratic system used in the Italian elections of 1919?
Proportional representation which made the government more representative of the interests of the Italian people.
