How to number a chair conformation
What ever way the cyclohexane is numbered the chair has to be numbered the same way
Ex: goes clockwise must go clockwise with chair
What happens when you flip a conformation
The numbers still need to be the same, what was equatorial turns axial and what was axial turns equatorial
but what ever was in the down or up spot must still be in the down or up spot when flipped
Axial
Anything in North/South position
Equatorial
Anything in the East/West position
What is the lower energy conformation
When the largest molecule is in the equatorial position
Will all molecules always be equatorial in lowest energy configuration
No, but the biggest one needs to be on equatorial
