Chainsaw Ops terminology Flashcards
Learn the names of saw related items and techniques.
What is a Kerf?
It is the space left behind by a saws chain, ie. the cut.
What is a notch/collapse zone?
It’s the ‘chunk’ or piece taken from a trunk, for felling, or from a branch for lowering the wood to the ground.
What is a plunge/bore cut?
When the cut is started from the attack quadrant of the bar and then the entire nose of the bar is ‘plunged’ into the wood. Most commonly used when setting a hinge for directional tree felling.
What is a ‘Hinge’
A hinge is the portion of fiber left near the cut to control the direction of the fall, or to gently lower the limb to the ground in limbing and bucking.
What is ‘holding wood’ or a ‘trigger’ in felling.
It’s the small section of fiber left at the end of the cut, away from the hinge and notch or collapse zone.
After setting the hinge with a back cut, this fiber holds the tree in place until the sawyer is ready for the wood to move.
What is an ‘off-set’ or ‘by-pass’ cut?
It’s a technique used to relieve tension in a limb/log. It’s performed by making two cuts, one from the tension side and one from the compression side. the cuts should go over half way through, about 3” apart that by-pass each other.
What is a ‘Scrench?’
It’s a combination tool, part screwdriver part wrench, used to loosen/remove the bar nuts and loosen the tension on the chain so as to remove the bar from the saw.
What is a ‘scabbard?’
The plastic cover that goes over the chain and bar.
What is a ‘Bar Dressing tool?’
It’s a blue, 90 degree file holder for keeping the edges of the saw’s bar square and even.
What’s a ‘felling wedge?’
They are the hard plastic pieces, yellow and orange, from 5” to 9” long. They are tapered and are used to drive into a kerf to help fell a tree or keep a kerf opened to prevent a bar from being pinched.
