chain Of Infection Flashcards
• The chain of infection refers to those elements that must be present to cause an infection from a
microorganism
the microorganism must have a means of transmission to get from one location to another, called direct and indirect
Modes of transmission
Microorganisms capable of causing infections (pathogens).
Infectious agent
describes a host (human or animal) not possessing
enough resistance against a particular pathogen to prevent disease or infection from occurring when exposed to the pathogen
Susceptible host
Means by which pathogens enter a host (e.g., gastrointestinal, respiratory, genitourinary tract).
Portal of entry
Environment where microorganisms live (e.g., humans, animals, inanimate objects).
Reservoir
Means by which pathogens escape from the reservoir (common routes include gastrointestinal, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts).
