CH9 Habitat Corridors Flashcards
What are the potential benefits of habitat corridors?
-Habitat corridors: connections that allow migration between reserves.
-Allow migration and gene flow
How does a strip corridor differ from a line corridor?
-Line corridor: Consists entirely of edge habitat, allow passage under/over roads, etc. (quick pass through for animals)
-Strip corridor: Broader, contain some interior habitat with intact functioning communities (may be
several hundred miles wide, and species may take their time passing through due to viable habitat)
How would you classify the corridor established for the pronghorn sheep?
line corridor (use fences to direct them)
What potential drawbacks do corridors have in a management scheme? What is the opportunity cost of establishing them?
-Spread of disease
-Vulnerability to hunters and predators
-Opportunity cost: Money used to establish corridors could be used to buy more land to form additional reserves.
What type of data would you need to justify and locate a habitat corridor?
- Know their normal migration routes
-high number of accidents (corridor can decrease risk - safer)
How could climate change affect the need to build habitat corridors?
So they can get to cooler places, migration.
