The act of placing or burying a human body in the ground
Interment
Area of ground set aside for for the final disposition of human remains
1. Owned by the government
2. Owned by corporations, non-profits, partnerships, sole owners, religious orders
Cemetery
1. Publicly owned
2. Privately owned
What makes a veteran eligible for burial in a national cemeteries
Members who died while on active duty or members who served on active duty and were ‘discharged under other than dishonorable conditions’
-Spouse and dependent family members may also be eligible
What are the five military discharge classifications?
- Honorable discharge
- General discharge under honorable conditions
- Other than honorable discharge
- Bad conduct discharge
- Dishonorable discharge

- To recover improperly buried valuables or items of personal significance
What are the general requirements for a disinterment?
- Person with right of disposition
-May be set by state statutes
-May be different than person with original RoD (if spouse remarried, moved away, estranged, … , it goes to next of kin - If the remains are going to be exposed, it requires a court order
The placing of human remains in a crypt in a mausoleum and provides for safeguarding of human remains above ground in a building or structure designed specifically for this purpose

What is generally required for an entombment?
-Embalming
-No wooden caskets
