HSV1: cold sores,fever, fatigue, tenderness of lymph nodes in groin or neck, urinary pain or discomfort. appearance of clusters of small painful blisters in the genital area. itching, pain during intercourse, vaginal or urethral discharge and sensitivity in abdominal area.
prodromal psymptoms
warning signs such as itching, burning, pain that an outbreak or infection is imending
viral shedding
release of virus particles that can potentially spread the infection to others
asymptomatic shedding
release of infectious virus particles when no symptoms of infection are present
antiherpetics
medications developed to treat outbreaks of the herpes virus
HPV
genital warts. most common STI in the US. typically painless warts. flat, lumpy or cauliflower appearance. may occur singly or in groups. many resolve on their own, or warts are removed
Hepititis B
no symptoms until the virus becomes active and begins to affect the liver. Jaundice, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, darkening of urine, rash joint pain.

diseases that establish themseleves in the human body when the immune system is weakened
retrovirus
type of virus such as HIV that survives and multiplies by invading and destroying the DNA of normal body cells and then replicating its own DNA into the host cell’s chromosomes
incidence
number of new cases of a disease in a population over time
