Ch.8 Flashcards
Heterotrophs
Living things that cannot make their own food and must eat food from their own environment (plants & animals) to sustain life
Autotrophs
Living things that make their own food using energy from sunlight or chemicals
Photoautotrophs
Living things that make their own food using sunlight
Light reactions
-plants absorb light using chlorophyll
-take place in thylakoid membranes
-produces ATP, NADPH, O2
-NADP+ converts to NADPH
Calvin cycle
-happens in stroma
-CO2 is turned into carbohydrates using ATP & NADH
-glucose is created
Absorption spectrum
Wavelengths absorbed by different pigments
Action spectrum
Tells us which colors of light (red, blue, or green) help plants do photosynthesis the best
Chlorophyll
-absorbs blue & red light
-reflects green light
-why plants are green
Light dependent stage
-produces NADPH
-produces ATP
Homologous genes
Genes in different species that are similar but originated from a common ancestral gene
