ch.8 Flashcards
population
A population is defined as a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area.
density
To calculate density, you divide the number of objects by the measurement of the area
dispersion
an ecological process that involves the movement of an individual or multiple individuals away from the population in which they were born to another location, or population, where they will settle and reproduce
growth rate
The rate, or speed, at which the number of organisms in a population increases
reproductive
relating to or concerned with the production of offspring
potential
The organism that produces the most organisms in that time frame has the most biotic potential
exponential growth
is growth that increases by a constant proportion
carrying capacity
a species’ average population size in a particular habitat.
niche
describes the role an organism plays in a community.
competition
the interaction of individuals that vie for a common resource that is in limited supply
predation
one organism kills and consumes another.
parasitism
relationship between two species of plants or animals in which one benefits at the expense of the other
mutualism
a type of symbiotic relationship where all species involved benefit from their interactions
commensalism
a relationship between individuals of two species in which one species obtains food or other benefits from the other without either harming or benefiting the latter
symbiosis
an ecological relationship between two species that live in close proximity to each other.
