Ch.7b- Fluvial Landforms Flashcards
Cut bank
the outside of a river bend where erosion occurs
Point bar
the inside of a river bend where sediment is deposited
Drainage/Tributary systems
where water begins to move to the head of the stream profile
The most erosion occurs in the (drainage/transport) system due to the (high/low) elevation
drainage/tributary systems; high;
Dendritic
a rivers preferred pattern – tree-like structures that branch off of there are no barriers to the river
Rectangular
occurs when water finds a place where rock is fractured by tectonics, forcing a channel into the weak point of the rock
Parallel
long ridges keep the water from doing what they want, forcing them to flow in the same, parallel direction
Trellised
found where there are many locations where the rock sticks up, and the only way for the water to get to base level is to turn around
Deranged
Truly random– can only occur in places where glaciers have come and gone
_______ plow and dump sediment randomly as they move
Glaciers
Radial
Occurs when water flows from just one mountain, as opposed to a range, indicating that it was once a volcano
Centripetal
where water moves into one point that is not base level, like in craters, basins
Artificial
a fake river flowing in a straight line – the river will fight this!
Annular
occurs in a place where a circular maze is created with rocks, as with folding/plunging
Transport System
the main route along which water travels
Distributary System
Found at the mouth of the stream profile, where it distributes into the larger water
Braided Stream
multiple intertwining channels
Meandering Streams
a single, winding channel
Thalweg
where the channel is the deepest and the water is moving the fastest
Oxbow
Abandoned river channels
Incised Drainage
occurs when river/stream cuts into its own bed and deepens its channel over time
Graded Stream
profile under which the stream is able to transport all of the sediment supplied to it. It is not depositing nor eroding, as it is in equilibrium
Alluvial Fans
A triangle/fan shaped deposit of sediment creates as flowing water interacts with mountains, hills or the steep walls of canyons
Delta
similar to alluvial fans, where river comes to a stop as it hits the ocean and drops all sediment; where the alluvium meets the coastline. It is an alluvial fan that progrades into a marine body of water.
