Ch.7- Fluvial Processes Flashcards
Rill
A shallow channel in the soil that is created by erosion from flowing water
Gullies
Large channels in the earths surface that are created when rills merge
Stream
A flowing body of water formed by merging gullies
River
A large waterway formed by the convergence of multiple streams & tributaries
List the fluvial landforms in increasing scale
runoff, rills, gullies, streams, tributaries, rivers
Drainage Density
a measurement of the total length of channels in a watershed, relative to the area of the watershed
Watershed
an area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas.
Stream Discharge
the volume of water that moves over a designated point over a fixed period of time
Laminar Flow
easy, parallel flow
Turbulent flow
where the current is more overchaotic
Critical Shear Stress
shear stress at which a material begins to move/erode
