What does the north bridge handle
The bridge between CPU and the rest of the computer. IO devices, high speed interfaces….
What does the south bridge handle
Lower speed devices. USB controller, HDD controller.
What does the term Chipset refer too
The north and south bridge
What is the North bridge called in AMD systems and Intel systems
In Intel Systems the north bridge is called Input Output Controller Hub
In AMD systems the south bridge is called Fusion Controller Hub
What hub is the South Bridge part of
The platform contorller hub
What is ROM
Read only memory
What is UEFI
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface
- Enables files systems that enable booting to drives larger than 2.2 TB
- Handles Boot loading
- Non dependent on x86
What is the CMOS
Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
- stores device specific parameters
- Keeps Clock up to date
- Almost always built into the south bridge.
What can be tweaked within the BIOS
AI tweaking advanced settings Monitor Boot tools Information Configuration
What security options does the BIOS offer
Chassis Intrusion Detection - Trips a swtich when the case is open
DriveLock - Protects HDD from getting lost or stolen
TrustedPlatformModule - secure cryptoprocessor for acceleration for cryptographic functions
What is the POST for
Powr on self test
Self diagnostic of devices
- Video is always first.
Explain the boot process
PSU test for proper voltage
CPU sends memory address out
BIOS POST passes and control is passed to bootstrap loader
(UEFI) Hands control to Boot manager
What is a PXE boot
a Preboot execuiiton environment to boot a PC withot any local storage
How is the CMOS cleared
Pins on the motherboard
