Ch.6: Air Pressure Flashcards
barometer
measures atmospheric pressure
️Pressure Gradient force
horizontal difference in temperature create horizontal difference in pressure, it establishes a force that causes air to move to a higher towrad lower pressure
station pressure
barometer reading at a particular location
sea level pressure
since pressure varies with alititudes the station must be corrected in order to compare them
contour lines
lines that connect points of equal elevation above sea level
isobars
lines of constant pressure
anticyclone
areas of high pressure
cycle
areas of low pressure
ridge
when hight contours bend strongly to north accompanied by warm weather
trough
when high contours bend strongly to south accompanied by cold weather
Corolis force
due to rotation of Earth causes wind to deflect to right of its independent path in Northern Hemisphere & lefts of its path in Southern Hemisphere
Pressure Gradient
its difference in pressure over distance
centripetal force
gradient wind blowing around a low pressure ceneter is constantly accelerating because it’s constantly changing direction
geostrophic wind
upper air winds that blow parallel to isobars at fairly constant speeding follows contours lines
