Ch.6 Flashcards
Calcitonin
The hormone secreted by c cells of the thyroid when calcium ion concentrations are abnormally high, restores homeostasis by increasing the rate of bone deposition and the rate of calcium loss at the kidneys.
Cortex
The outer layer or portion of an organ or bone.
Fracture
A break or crack in the bone.
Lamellae
Concentric layers; the concentric layers of bone within an osteon.
Ossification
The formation of bone
Suture
A fibrosis joint between flat bones of the skull.
Osteoclasts
A cell that dissolves the fibers and matrix of a bone.
Osteocytes
A bone cell responsible for the maintenance and turn over of the mineral content of the surrounding bone.
Osteon
The basic histological unit of compact bone, consisting of osteocytes organized around a central canal and separated by concentric Lamellae.
Articulations
A joint, the formation of words.
Amphiarthrosis
An articulation that permits a small degree of independent movement.
Articular capsule
The dense collagen fiber sleeve that surrounds a joint & provides protection and stabilization.
Bursa
A small sac filled with synovial fluid that cushions adjacent structures and reduces friction.
Diarthrosis
A synovial joint.
Meniscus
A fibrocartilage pad between opposing surfaces in a joint.
Suture
A fibrous joint between flat bones of the skull.
Symphysis
A fibrosis Amphiarthrosis, such as that between adjacent vertebrae or between the pubic bones.
Synovial fluid
The substance secreted by synovial membranes that lubricates joints.
Rheumatism
A condition characterized by pain muscles, tendons, bones or joints.
Calcification
The deposition of calcium salts within a tissue.
