Ch.5 - Memory Acquisition & Working Memory System Flashcards
Working memory has four things vs LTM:
Size
Ease of entry
Ease of retrieval
WM depends on current activity
The primacy effect describes
Remembering the first of something
The recency effect describes
Remembering the last of something
How do we mess with the recency effect?
Perform a short task immediately after the memory activity
What does slowing down a recall exercise do?
Improves LTM recall, doesn’t affect working memory
How many items can a working memory helper typically process?
About 7
What would chunking of this sequence look like:
271890326493?
271 890 326 493
How does chunking affect working memory?
It doesn’t affect capacity, it just changes the chunking strategy
What does the central control/executive do?
It puts the work in working memory; planning a response or making a decision
How is the central control/executive used if not planning or deciding?
It isn’t used. Helpers such as the articulary rehearsal loop may be employed
What are the central control/executive’s two helpers?
Articulary rehearsal loop: verbal
Visio-spatial buffer: visual
Rehearsal just means
Thinking about
What are the two types of rehearsal?
Maintenance (shallow, repeated)
Relational (what does each item mean?)
What are the three parts to memory?
Acquisition
Storage
Retention
