Risk assessment
A procedure that provides a measure of the offender’s propensity to further criminal activity and indicates the level of officer intervention that will be required.
Classification
A procedure consisting of assessing the risks posed by the offender, identifying the supervision issues, and selecting the appropriate supervision strategy.
Static factors
Correlates of the likelihood of recidivism that (once they occur) cannot be changed (age at first arrest, number of convictions, and so forth).
Dynamic factors
Correlates of the likelihood of recidivism that can be changed through treatment and rehabilitation (drug and alcohol abuse, anger management, quality of family relationships, and so forth).
Supervision
The oversight that a probation officer exercises over those in his or her custody.
Surveillance
Community monitoring methods of ascertaining offender compliance through one or more of the following means: face-to-face home visits, curfew, electronic monitoring, phone verification, and drug testing.
Field contact
An officer’s personal visit to an offender’s home or place of employment for the purpose of monitoring progress under supervision.
Caseload
The number of individuals or cases for which one probation or parole officer is responsible.
Principles of effective intervention
Eight treatment standards that, if practiced, have been shown to reduce recidivism above that of other methods and constitute a theory behind evidence-based correctional practices.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy
A therapeutic intervention of helping a person change, that is a blend of two different types of therapies: cognitive therapy which prepares the mind, and behavioral change which conditions the body.
Motivational interviewing
A communication style in which the community supervision officer creates a positive climate of sincerity and understanding that assists the offender in the change process.
Chronos
A chronological account of detailed notes written by a probation or parole officer and organized by date, about any client contact and/or case information that becomes a permanent part of the offender’s case file.
Interstate compact
An agreement signed by all states and U.S. territories that allows for the supervision of parolees and probationers across state lines.
Sending state
Under the interstate compact, the state of conviction.
Receiving state
Under the interstate compact, the state that undertakes the supervision.
