Ch5 Flashcards
What are personal ethics?
The cumulative results of childhood-through-adulthood experiences that produce individuals with loosely formed rules, which are personal ethics
Where do we learn our rules of ethical conduct?
Communities, religions, cultures, parents, relatives, teachers, activity leaders all come together to form a person’s personal ethics.
What are professional ethics?
Professional ethics are different and more explicit and personal ethics; lines can be drawn between personal and professional ethics in considering favors, gossip, white lies, appreciation, advice, and responsibility.
How do favors impact professional ethics?
We ask friends for favors, and the longer the friendship, the more intimate or complex the favors can become, but with professional ethics, favors may be small at first and not seem like a big deal but then become not feasible once they build up.
How does gossip impact professional ethics?
Information that could be seen as gossip in other situations causes issues in confidentiality for professional ethics
How do white lies impact professional ethics?
It is not appropriate to try to cover up motives, mistakes, or other personal shortcomings with white lies in an attempt to avoid conflict or censure; white lies have a tendency of requiring more and more complex lies to cover up smaller lies
What is the impact of exchanging gifts and favors?
Exchanging gifts creates a dual-role relationship, the client and the behavior analyst now become friends, and the BCBA is expected to return the favor at the right time
How does responsibility impact a behavior analyst?
Behavior analysts must be aware of the possibility that their clients have histories of guardians making excuses and take the necessary steps to ensure that agreements with parents are followed through; this is especially the case with parent-administered consequences in the home where the child is earning points for privileges for reinforcers
What is meant by the behavior analyst must transition from a civilian to a professional?
If standards from one’s pre-behavior analysis life are at cross-purposes with what is expected of a BCBA, they must be abandoned and replaced with our field’s rather strict guidelines for responsible conduct and ethical behaviors; we may regularly contact clients, paraprofessionals, and other professionals who will engage in unethical behaviors, possibly tempting us or even mocking us for our straight-laced approach
