What is meant by “do no harm” and what were three ethical examples?
Practicing outside of one’s area of expertise; not developing a reasonable data collection system and missing the significance of a behavior; working with staff members who are not at all well-versed in human behavior and will not necessarily think to offer all the information necessary to operate ethically
What is meant by “the behavior is not only quite severe but also complex in nature?”
[severe behaviors can be complex due to any number of environmental variables, including both antecedent and consequence events.]
What is meant by autonomy and what ethical issues may arise?
Respecting one’s autonomy means to promote their independence for self-sufficiency. Issues include someone preferring to keep another under their control, advocating for greater independence that might put a person in harm’s way; autonomy may not be good in some classroom and business situations
What ethical issues may arise in benefiting others?
Can often put behavior analyst at odds with other professionals and requires checks on “who is the client?” in any given situation
What is the basic principle of being just?
The golden rule; you should treat others as you would like to be treated; how what I like my mother or my child to be treated in similar circumstances?
Why is being truthful important to you and the profession?
And respected professionals attain the reputation based on the trust placed in them by others. Those were loyal, trustworthy, and honest or sought out as dependable and reliable sources of wise counsel and effective, ethical treatment. Being truthful and honest with clients, colleagues, and administrators provides the basis for long-term relationships that for successful career
When is a choice the choice?
[When an individual has the capacity to make a choice and is given knowledge of all options and projected outcomes]
What is meant by treating others with caring and compassion?
Respecting autonomy of clients, working to benefit them, devising programs that accord them dignity; clients should not only be given choices but also interpersonal relationships should demonstrate sympathy and concern
How does one demonstrate pursuit of excellence?
Being aware of the latest research in the field and in one specialty and incorporating the most up-to-date methods and procedures in one’s practice of behavior analysis; subscribe to journals, attend specialty workshops, attend state association meetings and the meetings of the ABA, attain continuing education hours
What is meant by “the client does not fail, the program does?”
It is the responsibility of the behavior analyst to create an appropriate program for treating some behavioral excess or deficit not the client’s responsibility to respond as desired to whatever treatment is presented.
