Ch5 Flashcards
External bleeding =
blood coming from an open wound
Types of external bleeding
1) Arterial bleeding: bright red + fast + under pressure + life threatening + pulse
2) vein bleeding: dark red + easy control
3) capillary bleeding: oozing from capillary
Controlling of external bleeding?
Direct pressure
- on the wound to restrict the blood flow through the wound and allows
normal clotting to occur
• Elevating the injured area
- slows the blood flow
• Pressure bandage
- place a sterile bandage or clean cloth on the wound
- apply constant pressure until the bleeding stops
• Tourniquet
- may be applied proximal to the wound on the affected area
- a tourniquet is effective in controlling life threatening bleeding from a
limb
Controlling External bleeding?
- Cover the wound with sterile dressing
- Apply direct pressure until bleeding stops
- Cover dressing with bandage and check circulation beyound the injury
- if bleeding Does NOT stop → apply more dressing and bandage and continue to apply presssure, and take steps to minimize shock and CALL EMS. - Position the tourniquet
- around the limb , 5 cm above the wound and not over a joint
- pull strap through the buckle, if necessary, and pull it tightly and secure it in place
- twist the ROD = until flow of bleeding stops and secure the rod in place, and not cover the tourniquet with clothing. - Record Time
- note and record the time that you applied the tourniquet and give this to EMS
Types of internal bleeding
RTA + closed bone fracture + falling down +stap wound +visceral injury or disease like oral rectal urinary peptic ulcer
Tourniquet what is?
is effective in controlling life threatening bleeding from a
limb.
Tourniquet what is?
is effective in controlling life threatening bleeding from a
limb.
If I had external injury and I Cover dressing with bandage and check circulation beyound the injury
if bleeding Does NOT stop what I will do?
apply more dressing and bandage and continue to apply pressure and call EMS
Position of the tourniquet?
Around the limb
5cm above the wound and not over a joint
What can i do if I have life threatening bleeding from an arm or leg and tourniquet is not available
- Open the clothing over the bleeding wound
- Wipe away any pooled blood
- Pack (stuff) the wound with bleeding control gauze (preferred), plain gauze, or clean cloth
- Apply steady pressure with both hands directly on top of the bleeding wound
- Push down as hard as you can
- Hold pressure to stop bleeding. Continue pressure until relieved by medical responders.
