CH3.8 Equilibrium consants Flashcards
dynamic equilibrium
Is a reversible reaction where the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal, so the quantities of each substnace stay the same
Le chantelier’s principle states ..
That in a system at dynamic equilibrium experiences a chang in its conditions thent the equilibrium will shift to try to minimise the chagne
Kc
The equilibrium constant in term of concentration and is usually used for reactions in solution although it can be used for any reaction
kp
Is the equilibrium constant in terms of parital gas pressures and is used for reaction only involving gases
Kc equation
Kc = (X)^x(Y)^y/(A)^a(B)^b
where aA + bB xX + yY
Kp equation for equation aA + bB xX + yY
kP =pX^x pY^y / pA^a pB^b
what if Kc is less than 1
very few products are force and most of the mixture is starting materials. This is typically the case when change in Gibbs for the reacttion is positive as the reaction will not occur spontaneously.
If Kc is more than 1
then most of the reactants have been converted into products. This is typically the case when change in Gibbs for the reaction is negative as the reaction iwll occur spontaneously
what is the only thing that will effect Kc and Kp
temperature
exothermic reaction Kc Kp
increasing temperature decreases Kc and Kp
endothermic reaction
increasing temperature increases Kc and Kp
an equimolar mixture
is one that has equal amounts of moles ( and hence equal concentration) of each susbtance
partial pressure
the pressure f a particular gas in a mixture
