Ch3 P&T Flashcards
Psychopathology
Intense, frequent, and/or persistent maladaptive patterns of emotion, cognition, and behavior
Developmental psychopathology
Emphasizes that these maladaptive patterns (from psychopathology) occur in the context of typical development and result in the current and potential impairment of infants, children, and adolescents.
Developmental pathways
The principle that adjustment and maladjustment are points or places along a lifelong map
Equifinality and multifinality
refer to similarities and differences in individual pathways to a disordered outcome
Competence
reflects effective functioning in important environments
Risk
Increased vulnerability to disorder
Risk factors
The individual, family, and social characteristics that are associated with increased vulnerability
Resilience
Adaptation (or competence) despite adversity
Protective factors
The individual, family, and social characteristics that are associated with this positive adaptation
Child maltreatment
A broad category that includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect; it reflects the “gross violation of the rights of a vulnerable and dependent child”
Cross-sectional research
The collection of data at a single point in time, with comparisons made among groups of participants.
Longitudinal research
The ongoing collection of data from the same group of participants, for the study of individuals over time
Developmental cascades
The cumulative consequences for development of the many interactions and transactions that result in spreading effects across levels, among domains at the same level, and across different systems or generations
Translational research
Research designed, conducted, and interpreted with meaningful applications and social value in mind. The goal of translational research is “to move basic findings more rapidly through the pipeline into novel treatments and preventive efforts to reduce or alleviate physical, emotional, and behavioral health problems”
