Introduction
Administrative law encompasses more than just “laws”:
Includes all legislative acts of all levels of governments
Rules, decisions, and other directives of public, officials, agencies, boards, and commissions
Administrative tribunals
- agencies created by legislation regulate activities or do specific things
Government Regulation of Business
Administrative law regulates business-related activity:
Businesses must be aware of administrative bodies or agencies that can impact operations
Failure to comply can lead to closing of business or penalties
Most professions controlled by a self-governing body created by statute
Establishes and maintains the standards of the profession
E.g. law, medicine, accounting, engineering, etc.
Regulatory Control of Professions and Skilled Service Providers
Entity created to regulate or control a particular profession or group of individuals
For professions - take form of self-governing college, society, or association
For business persons or trades - legislation designates a branch of ministry of the government to handle regulation
Policy guidelines and goals for governing entity:
Determine skill requirements (i.e. entry requirements)
Education / training and formal examination
Registration or licensing procedure
Process for revocation or termination of licenses
Broad-Policy Administrative Law
Provincial legislatures and federal government have passed broad-policy administrative laws

Impact business practices
Shape commercial environment for business
Create licensing and compliance requirements
Maintenance of standards (e.g. weights and measures, packaging, etc.)
Set ground rules for how business is conducted
Labour-relations legislation
Regulates relationship between labour unions employtees they represent, and employers
Provides structure and process for union certification, collective bargaining, resolution of disputes
Other important agencies or boards:
Human rights, pay equity, employment standards
Workers’ Compensation Board
