Q

Why does an absorption line spectrum have black lines on it?

A

Because particular wavelengths of light are absorbed when the light travels through a cold gas.

Q

Why do you only certain wavelengths of light absorbed by certain elements?

A

Because electrons in atoms only have certain fixed values of energy, and will only absorb the incoming photons if they have exactly the correct amount of energy to jump of them up an energy level.
