Ch2 Energy transfer by heating Flashcards
1
Q
thermal energy
A
mc ∆ θ
2
Q
specific heat capacity
A
the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of the substance
by 1 degree Celsius
3
Q
Reducing energy transfer
A
high thickness of a material
low thermal conductivity
4
Q
5 ways of reducing energy transfer at a house
A
- loft insulation such as fibreglass
- air between fibres reduce it by conduction - cavity wall insulation
- space between two layers of bricks
- traps air in small pockets - aluminium foil between radiator and wall
- reflects energy away - double-glazed windows
- dry air between the panes is a good insulator
- vacuum between panes prevents energy transfer - thicker bricks with lower thermal conductivity
