Ch14 Light Flashcards
Law of reflection
angle of incidence = angle of reflection
diffuse reflection
parallel light rays reflected from a rough surface are scattered in different directions
Speculation reflection
parallel light rays are reflected of a smooth surface in a single direction
Virtual image
Formed at a place where light rays appear to come from after having been reflected (is laterally inverted)
Refraction
Change in the direction and speed of a plane wave when it travels across a boundary of two mediums with different densities at a non-zero angle
What happens when light enters a more optically dense medium
It is refracted towards the normal
What happens when light enters a less optically dense medium
It is refracted away from the normal
What happens when light is refracted
The speed of the wave changes, causing a change in direction
index of refraction
n = ci/cr
= incident wave speed/ refracted wave speed
law of refraction(snell’s law)
n1 sinθi = n2 sinθr
speed of light in air
1x10^8
wave speed
v= frequency x wavelength
Absorption of a wave
Heat the substance because it would gain energy from the waves
e.g Light is absorbed by darkness
Transmission of a wave
Waves keep travelling in the same direction through an object
Light is transmitted by glass
Diffraction of a wave
The spreading of waves around obstacles
