Self-Disclosure
Making the self known to others, letting others know what an individual:
* Thinks.
* Feels.
* Wants
Effective Self-Disclosure
1.Feelings and facts.
2. Transparency: Speaking openly without any hidden agendas
3. Authenticity: Ensuring how one presents oneself in meetings and
interactions is consistent with one’s online presence
4. Greater breadth and depth in relationships over time.
5. Focus on the present and not the past.
6. Reciprocity: matching the level of self-disclosure offered by people with whom
one becomes acquainted
7. Acceptance that some amount of risk is involved
8. Work focus.
Self-description
Disclosure of nonthreatening information such as
one’s age, address, major, or where one works
Self-disclosure
Revealing significant personal information about
oneself that exceeds the expectations of the moment and that is not
easily apparent to others
Computer-Mediated Communication, or C M C
Communication occurring through the use of electronic devices
Issues:
Provides an avenue for quick self-disclosure with individuals one does
not know well.
* Provides anonymity that can lead to inappropriate self-disclosure.
* Can lead to communication that can appear to be abrasive, impulsive,
and abusive
The Johari Window
Helps individuals understand:
* How well they know themselves?
* How much of themselves they let others know?
Trust
One’s faith or belief in the integrity or reliability of another person or thing.
Integrity
Honesty and sincerity.
* Ability to honestly disclose and share one’s thoughts, beliefs, and
feelings
Competence
Knowledge and ability.
* Being aware of one’s strengths and limitations, offering help where
possible and seeking assistance when needed.
Consistency
Conformity with previous practice and good judgment in
handling situations.
* Doing those things that one says will do.
Loyalty:
Faithfulness to one’s friends and ideals.
* Supporting friends and associates both within and outside their
presence
Openness: most important in business
Welcoming new ideas and willingness to share ideas with
others.
* Most important trust factor for employees in an organizational setting.
