Self-Awareness
Capacity for introspection and the ability to reconcile oneself as an
individual separate from the environment and other individuals.
Knowing one’s motivations, preferences, and personality and
understanding how they influence one’s:
* Judgment.
* Decisions.
* Interactions with other people.
How does self-awareness influence interpersonal effectiveness?
It enables individuals to comprehend their interactions with others.
How does motivation influence an individual’s behavior?
It drives the choice of one action over another.
What is self-monitoring in the context of behavior?
The capacity to control one’s thoughts before acting or speaking.
Individualistic
People define themselves independent of group affiliation,
and they use internal information to increase self-awareness.
(prioritizing their own goals and needs over those of a group or community).
Collectivist:
People define themselves in relation to what is acceptable
within their group.
(prioritizes the group’s needs over their own individual goals.)
Means for Obtaining Self-Awareness
1. Perception feedback (others sees in you)
2. Self-disclosure (sharing something about yourself)
3. Diverse Experiences ( what you’ve done in life)

Personality
Relatively stable set of characteristics, tendencies, and temperaments
formed by heredity and by social, cultural, and environmental factors.
* Determines how individuals interact with and react to various people
and situations
Extroversion
Social or antisocial.
* Outgoing or shy.
* Assertive or passive.
* Active or inactive.
* Talkative or quiet.
Agreeableness
Friendly or reserved.
* Cooperative or guarded.
* Flexible or inflexible.
* Trusting or cautious.
* Good-natured or moody.
* Soft-hearted or tough.
* Tolerant or judgmental.
Emotional stability
Reacts to certain events.
* Weighs options before acting.
* Looks at a situation objectively
Conscientiousness
Is dependable.
* Can be counted on.
* Follows through on commitments.
* Keeps promises.
Openness to experience
nterested in broadening his or her horizons or limiting them.
* Learning new things or sticking with what he or she already knows.
* Meeting new people or associating with current friends and co-workers.
* Going to new places or restricting oneself to known places
Self-Monitoring
Ability to regulate one’s thinking before speaking or acting
Perception
Process by which individuals select, evaluate, and organize information
and make sense of it.
1.Not always consistent with reality.
* Perceiver’s interpretation of reality.
* Formed based on the perceiver’s biases.
