Many surrounding buildings were also a part of the 1889 expo. The tower was a monumental feat. Tallest in the world. It combined modern (wrought-iron girders) and historic styles (Arch Way).
The elevators were a new thing for the world. Done by Otis elevators of NYC
Used as a radio transmission tower in the 20th century
The exposition also involved a “hall of machines”, including manufacturing machines, lightbulbs, etc
Other exhibits along the Seine, including the “hall of habitation”, which was a structuring of different housing forms from the past
Expo of 1889 was to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution, and was marketed around the world as an international expo. Many countries were encouraged to participate, but some declined.

This work formed a link between the Naturalism displayed at the 1889 Expo, and German Realism.
It’s a picture that shows national identity.
Women who are represented in their traditional Bavarian costumes. Reading bibles at church.
The nationalist roots of Germany presented in a naturalistic style.

Ilya Repin
Repin was part of the Wanderer’s society of St. Petersburg. They would exhibit in travelling shows.
Shows Repin’s personal feeling of responsibility for the fate of the poor.
Shows Russian peasants enlisted to work essentially as animals. Used as oxen.
Slavery had been stopped in Russia before this, but it continued to happen, and Repin wanted to turn attention to it. He brought this piece to Paris to do so.
Faces are important part, not hidden. Different psychological reactions being displayed by the figures.
