Ch17 Flashcards
Bottom-up processing
Analysis that begins with the sensory receptors and works up to the brains integration of sensory information
Perception
The process of organizing sensory info
Top- bottom processing
Information processing guided by higher-leek mental processes as wheb we construct perceptions drawing on our experience and expectations
Transduction
Conversion of one form of energy into another. In sensation, the transforming of stimulus energies, such as sight, soubds, and smells, into neural impulses our brain can interpret
Psychophysics
The study of relationships between the physical charactoristics of stimuli, such ad their intensity, and our psychological experience of them.
Absolute threshold
The minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus 59 percent of the time.
Signal selection theory
A theory predicting hiw and when we detect the presence if a faint stimulus amid background stimulation. Assumes there is no signal absolute threshold and that detection depends partly on a persons experiences, expectaions, motivations, and alertness
Subliminal
Below ones absolute threshold for conscious awareness
Priming
The activation, often unconsciously, of certain associations thus predisposing ones perception memory or response
Difference threshold
In minimum difference between two stimuli required for detection 50 percent of the time. We experience the difference threshold as a just noticible difference
Webers law
The principal that to be preseived as different two stimuli must differ by a given percentage
Sensory adaptation
Diminished sensitivity as a consquence of constant stimulation
Perceptual set
A mental predisposition to percieve one thing and not another
Perception set
A mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another
