Ch.15 Flashcards
Direct VS alternating current
DC- electrons move in ine direction Edison
AC- electrons alternate directions back and forth tesla
60 hertz means what for AC
60 times back and forth per second
Voltage
Pressure/push of an electron
Amperage
Amount of electrons moving
Where DANGER is
High volts low amperage ?
Harmless
Power definiton and equation
How quickly we use electricity
Power (watt) = volt x amp
1,500 watts = how many kilowatts
1.5
Why is philly power more money than where mr Moore lives
Philly=peco=limerick powerpoant= 350$ million
Others=met ed= cheap coal power plants
Conductor
Any substance that allows free flow of electrons
Low resistance to electric flow
Low ohm rating
Insulator
Any substance that doesn’t transmit electricity well, high resistance to electric flow
High ohm rating
ohm
Greek
Measure resistance
Why are C batteries and A batteries different sizes yet both have 1.5 volts
Different amps ( c has more)
When mr Moore was connecting clips to light and battery why did he need to clip both clips to battery for light to come on
Because the electrons needed a circuit (circular pathway) to get to light
Lightbulb = load (part doing work)
Open switch vs closed switch
No light vs light
It takes about a day for one electron the jump from Adam to Adam and make it all the way through a wire so why does the light come on right away
Because electrons push their neighbor who pushes it’s neighbor who push it it’s neighbor until the last one right next to the light gets pushed and starts the light so the voltage is immediate
Thicker the wire =
Less resistance and more amps/electrons flow
Fast
Ground wire
Third prong on a cord
Prevents damage
Fuse vs circuit breaker
Fuse is you little box you put on a cord so that when the cord melts it will melt the fuse first instead of the actual cord and it will break a circuit to warn you
A circuit breaker replaced fuses and it’s just a switch and it does the same thing but when you flick a switch it open and closes the system
GFI
Ground fault interpretator
How did tesla use Niagara falls
Niagara Falls water would turn water turbines connected by shafts charging power motors
Series circuit vs parallel circuit also draw out
Series circuit- only one pathway if one of the loads break then it would shut everything down because electrons have to travel through one path and if you add a ball the voltage drops causing the lights to dim
Parallel-many different pathways for electrons so if one of them breaks in the electron still has other pathways to go through to get it to work and voltage is constant
Solenoid
Makes motion with electromagnet
Led to Meter that led to motor
Explain motors
There is a little coil between a magnet and the opposite ends of the coil and the magnet start to attract so the coil spins but since the quill now has momentum at overshoots and a commutator changes the direction of the flow and it starts spinning again overshoot spins other way overshoots and keeps going.
Motor and generator
Same thing ran backwards they make electricity with mechanical energy
Electricity
Electrons in motion
Also called electric current
