Ch.12 Social Cognitive Theory- Bandura & Mischel Flashcards
define acquisition
learning of new behaviours viewed by Bandura as independent of reward and contrasted with performance- which is seen as dependent on reward
define behavioural signatures
individually distinctive profiles of situation behaviour relationships
define CAPS
cognitive-affective processing system; theoretical framework developed by Mischel and colleagues in which personality is understood as containing a large set of highly interconnected cognitive and emotional processes; interconnections-> system
define competencies
structural unit in social cognitive theory reflecting individual’s ability to solve problems/perform tasks necessary to achieve goals
define context specificity
idea that given personality variable may come into play in some life settings or contexts but not others, with result that person’s behaviour may vary systematically across contexts
define delay of gratification
postponement of pleasure until optimum or proper time, concept particularly emphasized in social cognitive theory concerning self regulation
define evaluative standards
criteria for evaluating goodness or worth of person or thing. In social cog. theory, standards help people evaluate own actions-> affects how they behave/feel (proud, ashamed, satisfied, or disappointed with themselves)
define expectancies
social-cognitive theory; what individual anticipates or predicts will occur as the result of specific behaviors in specific situations (anticipated consequences)
define goals
social-cognitive theory, desired future events that motivate the person over extended periods of time and enable the person to go beyond momentary influences.
define microanalytic research
Bandura’s suggested research strategy concerning the concept of self-efficacy in which specific rather than global self-efficacy judgments are recorded
define observational learning (modeling)
Bandura’s concept for the process through which people learn merely by observing the behavior of others, called models
define perceived self-efficacy
In social-cognitive theory, the perceived ability to cope with specific situations
define performance
production of learned behaviors, viewed by Bandura as dependent on rewards, in contrast with the acquisition of new behaviors, which is seen as independent of reward
define reciprocal determinism
The mutual, back-and-forth effects of variables on one another; in social-cognitive theory, a fundamental causal principle in which personal, environmental, and behavioral factors are viewed as causally influencing one another
define self-evaluative reactions
Feelings of dissatisfaction versus satisfaction (pride) in oneself that occur as people reflect on their actions
define self regulation
Psychological processes through which persons motivate their own behavior.
Define vicarious conditioning
Bandura’s concept for the process through which emotional responses are learned through the observation of emotional responses in others
